Our approach

Our name, Fluid Psychology, represents not only the flexible and adaptable approach we take as a practice, but also serves as a metaphor for the ups and downs of this thing we call life.

A human life is often both wonderful and painful in equal measure; in fact, it’s probably a universal truth that the things we care about the most in life often cause us the most pain. We will all experience times when life hits hard, when we get overwhelmed, and when it feels like a powerful wave has crashed into us and is dragging us under. We can recognise at some level that these are inevitable and inescapable. But what helps to keep us balanced are the moments of connection, love, lightness, playfulness, and humour, experiences which, however fleeting, help to keep us afloat and guide us towards a life worth living.

Our practice is built upon the foundation of this philosophy, enabling us to offer a compassionate, non-judgemental, strengths-based, and de-pathologising stance to the issues that have prompted you to seek help, rather than focusing on arbitrary diagnoses, syndromes, or symptoms.

In the therapy room, our aim is not to fully eliminate your pain and  suffering, because we believe that this isn’t actually possible (after all, if it were, you probably would have figured out a way to do it already!). Instead, we offer a warm, understanding, and compassionate space where you are empowered to face the source of your pain, and better understand the factors that contribute to it. We do this both by considering past and present influences, by leveraging your existing resources and strengths, and by guiding you towards new, more adaptive ways of thinking, feeling, and doing.

Ultimately, our mission is to support you to embrace what it means to be ‘you’, and help steer you toward a life filled with richness, purpose and vitality, regardless of whether you’re navigating calm seas, a powerful storm, or anything in between.

Insomnia and sleep issues
It's normal to experience short periods of disrupted sleep when we're going through a period of stress, a major life event, or biological changes. But when restless nights turn into restless weeks and restless months, we may be experiencing what's called chronic insomnia.
Depression and anxiety
As human beings, each and every one of us is bound to experience depression and anxiety at some point. We may worry and ruminate about even little things. We may want to hide away from the world, avoiding things we used to do. We may feel scared or uncertain about the future. But when these experiences stick around for a little too long, we can find ourselves increasingly disconnected from our values, and from doing what matters to us.
Workplace issues
Work plays a big role in our lives. Not only does it allow us to support ourselves and our loved ones financially, it also gives us a sense of purpose, provides social connections, and even contributes to our identities. When significant workplace issues occur, these benefits may be abruptly taken away from us. We may also find ourselves having to navigate the stressful and complex worker's compensation system, further compounding our injuries.
Trauma
Up to 75% of Australians will experience a traumatic event in their lifetime. Even more may have experienced what are called adverse childhood events (ACEs), experiences that do not meet the criteria for 'traumas'' but nonetheless can have a similarly negative effect on our minds, bodies, sense of identity, and social relationships. When these traumas are not properly resolved or processed, we may find ourselves stuck in patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving, that take us away from the lives we want to live.

Philip Phung – Registered Psychologist

Phil is the principal psychologist and owner of Fluid Psychology. He offers therapy services for adults and adolescents (aged 16 and over), and is registered to see clients under the following schemes:

  • Medicare
  • WorkSafe Victoria
  • TAC
  • Comcare
  • DVA
  • Private Health Funds (e.g. Medibank Private and BUPA)

Phil aims to bring warmth and understanding to each session, but he also believes that fun, play, and humour (when appropriate) all play a role in effective therapy. He prefers to see people as a rich constellation of many influences, rather than as a diagnosis or set of symptoms. His approach is fluid and eclectic but integrative, bringing together different combinations of evidence-based approaches, depending on your unique needs and preferences.
